Brain Fog, Broken Sleep and Tired Skin: What The Research Actually Says About Adaptogens For Menopause

01 August 2026

If you have spoken to me about menopause before, you will know I do not believe in quick fixes. But I do believe in understanding what is actually happening in your body, and what the evidence says can genuinely help.

So this month, I wanted to step back from my own story and dig into the research behind three of the symptoms I hear about most from women in this community. Brain fog that will not lift. Sleep that falls apart no matter how tired you are. Skin, hair and nails that suddenly feel like they belong to someone else.

These are not small complaints. They are hormonal. And they are the exact reason I brought APIH into the store. This blog is not about why I love the brand, I have written that one already. This is about what is happening beneath each symptom, what the research shows, and which blend is designed to support it, including the honest pros and cons.

Why Menopause Hits Your Brain, Sleep and Skin All At Once

Oestrogen does far more than regulate your cycle. It influences collagen production, temperature regulation, neurotransmitter activity and how your brain processes memory and focus. As oestrogen declines through perimenopause and menopause, all of these systems feel it at once, which is why symptoms rarely arrive one at a time.

Adaptogens will not replace oestrogen. Nothing herbal does. But a growing body of research suggests certain plant compounds and nutrients can support the systems that are struggling, particularly the stress response, the nervous system and collagen production. Here is what the evidence says about each area, and how APIH approaches it.

Brain Fog and Focus

Forgetting words mid sentence. Losing your thread in a meeting. Standing in a room and forgetting why you walked in. Brain fog is one of the most disorientating menopause symptoms because it can feel like something is wrong with you, when really, it is hormonal.

Declining oestrogen affects how the brain uses glucose for energy and how efficiently neurons communicate, which is why concentration, word recall and processing speed can all take a hit during perimenopause and menopause.

What the research says

Lion's mane mushroom has become one of the most studied natural ingredients for cognitive support. It contains compounds called hericenones and erinacines, which research suggests may stimulate nerve growth factor, a protein involved in maintaining and repairing neurons. Small clinical studies in adults with mild cognitive changes have shown improvements in focus, memory and processing speed after consistent use over several weeks, and early research specifically in menopausal women has shown improvements in focus, irritability and anxiety after a short course of daily use.

Panax ginseng, ginkgo biloba and bacopa monnieri are three of the most researched botanicals for mental performance and healthy circulation, and are often used together for this reason, since supporting blood flow to the brain is thought to be part of how they help with clarity and fatigue.

APIH Vitality Blend

This blend combines lion's mane, ginkgo biloba, panax ginseng, bacopa monnieri and B vitamins, designed to be taken in the morning to support focus, memory and steady energy without overstimulation.

Pros:

Combines several well researched cognitive botanicals rather than relying on one

Formulated for daily use, with no reported dependency

Supports energy without the crash associated with caffeine or stimulants

Cons and honest considerations:

Most cognitive research uses higher doses over 8 to 16 weeks, so results build gradually rather than overnight

Research specifically in menopausal women is still small in scale, though promising

Not recommended alongside blood thinning medication without medical advice, as lion's mane may have mild anticoagulant properties

Sleep and Stress

Waking at 3am with a racing mind. Feeling wired but exhausted. Struggling to switch off even when the day was calm. Sleep disruption is one of the most reported menopause symptoms, and it is rarely just about sleep. It is about a nervous system that is working harder than it used to.

As oestrogen and progesterone decline, the body becomes more sensitive to cortisol, the stress hormone. This is why many women notice they cope with stress differently in perimenopause than they did in their thirties, even when the stress itself has not changed.

What the research says

Ashwagandha is one of the most studied adaptogens for cortisol regulation. Clinical trials have shown it can meaningfully lower perceived stress and cortisol levels, with some studies showing reductions of well over a third after consistent use. A dedicated study in perimenopausal women found ashwagandha root extract eased mild to moderate menopausal symptoms, including sleep disturbance and hot flush frequency, over an eight week period.

Magnesium bisglycinate is a highly absorbable form of magnesium, a mineral involved in over three hundred processes in the body, including the ones that help muscles release tension and the nervous system wind down at the end of the day. Many women are mildly deficient without realising it, particularly during times of high stress.

APIH Calm Blend

This blend combines magnesium bisglycinate, ashwagandha, lavender extract and vitamin C, designed to be taken in the evening to support cortisol regulation, muscle relaxation and restful sleep, without sedating you.

Pros:

Ashwagandha has one of the stronger evidence bases of any adaptogen for stress and cortisol

Non sedating, so it will not leave you groggy the next morning

Magnesium bisglycinate is gentler on digestion than other forms of magnesium

Cons and honest considerations:

Ashwagandha is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding

It should be used with caution alongside thyroid medication or sedatives, so check with your doctor if either applies to you

Benefits tend to build over two to eight weeks of consistent use, this is not a one off sleep aid

Skin, Hair and Nails

Skin that feels thinner. Nails that split more easily. Hair that seems to be thinning at the part line. This is one of the more visible sides of menopause, and it comes down to one thing more than any other, collagen.

Collagen production naturally declines by around one percent a year from our mid twenties, but research shows this accelerates sharply around menopause, with some studies estimating women lose up to thirty percent of their skin collagen in the first five years after their final period. This affects skin elasticity, hydration, joint comfort and the strength of hair and nails.

What the research says

Hydrolysed collagen, meaning collagen broken down into smaller peptides for better absorption, has one of the larger evidence bases in this category. A meta-analysis of clinical trials involving close to a thousand women found consistent improvements in skin hydration and elasticity after around twelve weeks of daily use at doses of roughly two and a half to ten grams a day. Separate research has linked collagen peptides to improved joint comfort, which matters given how many women notice new joint stiffness during perimenopause.

Turmeric, and specifically its active compound curcumin, is one of the most researched anti-inflammatory and antioxidant botanicals available, and is often paired with collagen for this reason, supporting the skin from both a structural and a protective angle.

APIH Balance Blend

This blend combines hydrolysed collagen peptides with organic turmeric, designed to be mixed into a daily drink to support skin elasticity, hydration, and the strength of hair and nails from within.

Pros:

Collagen for skin hydration and elasticity is one of the better researched areas in this whole category

Tasteless and easy to add to any drink, which supports the daily consistency that makes collagen effective

Turmeric adds antioxidant support alongside the structural benefits of collagen

Cons and honest considerations:

Results are gradual, most studies show visible change from around eight to twelve weeks, not days

Contains bovine collagen, so it is not suitable for vegans or vegetarians

As with any supplement, quality and sourcing matters, which is exactly why I was so particular about vetting this brand before stocking it

What Adaptogens Cannot Do

I would rather tell you this honestly than let you find out the hard way. Adaptogens are not a replacement for hormone replacement therapy, and they will not stop menopause from happening. If your symptoms are significant, please speak with your doctor about the full range of options available to you, including HRT.

What the research does suggest is that ingredients like ashwagandha, lion's mane and hydrolysed collagen can meaningfully support the systems that are under strain, the stress response, cognitive function and skin structure, particularly when used consistently over weeks rather than days. They work quietly, in the background, rather than dramatically overnight.

Which Blend Is Right For You

If brain fog and focus are your biggest struggle, start with Vitality Blend in the morning.

If sleep and stress are running the show, start with Calm Blend in the evening.

If skin, hair and nails are what you have noticed changing, start with Balance Blend daily.

Many women in our community use all three, layered into their morning and evening routine. There is no wrong place to start, only the place that matches what your body is asking for right now.

Final Thoughts

Menopause symptoms are not in your head, and they are not something to simply push through. They are physiological, they are researched, and increasingly, they are supportable.

I brought APIH into the store because the science behind these ingredients held up to my scrutiny, and because I use them myself. If you are unsure which blend fits where you are right now, send me a message, I am always happy to talk it through.

This is your reminder to slow down, nourish yourself and take up space.
